Musician etiquette
Do people who used to be in bands but aren’t any more get offended if you try and talk to them about the past?
I’m considering going to see Grant Hart just to tell him that Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade means a lot to me.
I imagine he’s really interested in what pale twenty-one year old art students think about a record he wrote songs and played drums on over 20 years ago.
So this is actually very relevant to my recent activities: an interview I just did with Graham Coxon.
So I asked him one question about the reunion. He gave a one-sentence answer. I ask him a question about why he left Blur in 2002 though. Went into a lot of detail about how it felt for him at the time and seemed to enjoy recounting it.
I guess the lesson is: find a topic they’ll like about their past and they’ll happily divulge. If one isn’t available, don’t bother.
